August 24

On August 24, 1987, civil rights activist and organizer Bayard Rustin died in 1987 at the age of 75.

Bayard Rustin was an influential civil rights and gay rights activist in the 1900s. He was involved in key global civil and gay rights movements, but often times didn’t receive credit due to his sexuality and past indiscretions. Despite being left out of the spotlight, Rustin remained dedicated to global activism and humanitarianism. Rustin was the lead organizer of the historic 1963 March on Washington. In 1964, he created the A. Philip Randolph Institute, a labor rights organization for African Americans.

After years of public service and activism, Rustin died in 1987 at the age of 75.
