November 12
On November 12, 1941, the National Negro Opera Company was founded by Madame Lillian Evanto.
The National Negro Opera Company was the first opera company created for and by African Americans. After more than 15 years of service, the company disbanded in 1962.
In recent years the city of Pittsburgh collectively pitched in to start restoration efforts for the historical site. The National Negro Opera Company is set to reopen in 2024.
