The African Baptist Church is founded

August 8

On August 8, 1805, the African Baptist Church was founded by Reverend Thomas Paul.

Early on, the congregation met at the African Meeting House, the oldest black church building. The church was formed after black people were prohibited from attending predominantly white churches.

Today, it’s called the People’s Baptist Church of Boston.
