On June 8, 1982, Leroy “Satchel” Paige died. 

Baseball pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige was born in Mobile, Alabama in 1906. Paige made history as the first African American pitcher to pitch in a World Series game. 

After being barred from the Major Leagues because of his color, Paige took his talents to the Negro Leagues in 1926. Paige made history as the oldest player to debut in the Major Leagues on his 42nd birthday.
