On November 5, 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first African American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Shirley Chisholm made history throughout her political career. She played a key role in architecting policies that impacted the civil rights movement and the Black community.

Shirley Chisholm was also a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
