Mound Bayou was established in 1887

On July 12, 1887, two former slaves, Isaiah T. Montgomery and Benjamin T. Green established Mound Bayou. 

Mound Bayou is one of the largest African American communities in the nation with a population of 98% African American, according to the 2010 census.
