WHMM-TV broadcasts for the first time

On November 17, 1980, WHMM-TV, the first black owned public broadcasting station in the U.S., broadcasted for the first time. 

In 1980, WHMM-TV broadcasted for the first time at Howard University. WHMM-TV was the first black owned public broadcasting station in the U.S. to be operated by a historically black university (HBCU).

The name was later changed to WHUT (Howard University Television).
