On May 1, 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African American to receive a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.  

Gwendolyn Brooks was a famous poet and author during the 1900s. In 1950, Brooks won a Pulitzer Prize for “Annie Allen.” Gwendolyn Brooks died in 2000 at the age of 83.
