John Mercer Langston is born

On December 14, 1829, John Mercer Langston was born. 

John Mercer Langston an influential political figure during the 1800s. He was the first black man to represent Virginia in Congress. Mercer made history in 1909 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. 

John Mercer Langston died in 1897. He was 67 years old.
