Charlie Sifford becomes the first African American to win a major golf tournament

On November 10, 1957, Charlie Sifford became the first African American to win a major golf tournament. 

Sifford broke through color barriers throughout his professional golf career. His accomplishments include being the first African American to become a member of the PGA and the first African American to compete in a PGA tournament. 

Before retiring Sifford won a total of 422 PGA tournaments. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004. 

Sifford died in 2015 at the age of 92.
